Get You and Your Bike Ready for Spring!

Spring is here and so begins another year of riding!  Are you and your bike ready for the Spring riding season?  There are a few things you’ll need to do before you start enjoying rides around town and beyond.

Preparing Your Scooter or Motorcycle

Before taking your scooter or motorcycle out for a ride, go over it and give it a thorough inspection.  Examine the condition of the tires to see if they need replacing.  You should be looking for signs of dry rot, cracking and scalloped or balding tires.  These are all bad things.  Check the air pressure of the tires, too.   Inspect the controls – switches, cables, levers, throttle, etc. – to make sure they all work.  Also give special attention to your lights and make sure the other electrics work as well.

Depending on how well you’ve winterized your bike, you might need to bring it in for service.  If it’s been sitting around for a few months and doesn’t start, it could be a few things.  It could be as simple as getting a battery replaced or having the carburetor(s) cleaned.  If something’s not right with your bike, you can always schedule an appointment to have it checked out and serviced.  Please be aware, that just like you, everyone else wants to get their bike on the road.  Your best bet is to call and get on the schedule as soon as possible.

Preparing Yourself

Before you go out on a ride, inspect your gear.  First, inspect your motorcycle helmet for any wear and tear.  Check your helmet to see if it still fits properly.  Most manufacturers recommend replacing helmets every two to four years.  Even if your helmet isn’t damaged, over time materials deteriorate and weaken.  Inspect your jacket and other gear to ensure that it fits well and that there isn’t excessive wear and tear.  If you need new gear, come by the shop to see our selection of helmets, jackets, gloves, and pants.

If it’s been a few months since you’ve last gone for a ride, you might feel a little rusty.  No worries, practice first around the neighborhood and take it slow until you become familiar with your scooter or motorcycle again.  It also couldn’t hurt to review your Motorcycle Safety Foundation Rider Handbook.  You can view a PDF of it here: http://msf-usa.org/CurriculumMaterials/BRCHandbook2011.pdf

If you have any questions, feel free to call or stop by the shop.  We’ll be more than happy to help you get on the road.
